Greetings from the Grand Strand!

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season. I’ll keep it light in this newsletter – just a few updates on local happenings.

Murrells Inlet just got closer.

The southern extension for Highway 31 was finally opened to traffic on November 7. The original scheduled completion date was over two years ago but was delayed by lawsuits, road construction problems, etc. The new $99.7 million six-lane interstate-style road connects Hwy 31 from Hwy 544 to Hwy 707 near Murrells Inlet. It makes it a lot quicker and easier to get to the south end.

Out with the old and in with ??? (Something cool I’m sure!)

The Broadway 16 movie theater and Dragon’s Lair mini-golf course (both at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach) were demolished over the past couple of months. There will be new stores and attractions coming to this spot but no announcements have yet been made. The theater had been in operation since the 1990s.

Out with the old Breakers, in with the new Breakers Marriott.

The old Breakers Resort check-in building (Myrtle Beach) has been torn down to make room for a new 26-story Marriott hotel which will be operated as part of the Breakers Resort. The adjacent tower seen in the picture below will also be demolished. A 60 FT wide “maritime forest” will be constructed on the oceanfront at the end of 21st Ave next to the new hotel (the open space in the picture). By the way, there will not be any condos available for sale in the new hotel.
